movie of the week: The Devil’s Own (1997)

Harrison Ford is in the news this week with his latest Indiana Jones movie this coming weekend in theaters. In advance of that I watched the 1997 movie The Devil’s Own starring Harrison and Brad Pitt. Over 20 years after the release of this movie, Harrison said he was still proud of it, and in my opinion he is right. He plays a very respectable police officer with integrity and tries to be a father mentor to Brad Pitt.

It takes place in 1992 when the troubles were still going on in Northern Ireland (I have family in northern Ireland so thank God the troubles was back in the 20th century).

I love small details in movies, and one nice piece of detail that the director threw in that helps to place it in 1992 is at one point Harrison’s wife and daughter are learning how to navigate their home computer using the disk operating system (DOS). By 1997, Windows 95 was being shipped on almost all new computers and came with TCP/IP networking software, so certainly for businesses earlier versions of Windows were quickly being retired. So learning navigating in DOS wasn’t really a thing in 1997, but it certainly could have been in 1992 since DOS applications were probably more numerous than Windows 3.0 applications.

Regarding Indiana Jones, for people that haven’t seen it, I can definitely recommend The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles television show, and for people who still like collecting DVDs, the DVD sets are excellent because they also include several dozen interesting 30 minute documentaries on the subjects featured in the show episodes.
